 Aiptasia stings!

OUCH!

One of our local reef keepers (thanks Kyle) posted some interesting pictures of a reaction to skin contact with the dreaded aiptasia anemone. I've seen similar reactions from carpet anemones as well. Not deadly, but irritating and painful.

 Ouch

I have to ask...How did he come in contact with them clear up to his shoulder?  Was he swimming in his tank?  Was the toxin on his hands and then transfered when he touched his arm?

 getting stung

The couple times I have gotton bad rashes it was because the toxin was in the water.  As soon as my arm went into the water it started breaking out.  It sucked!

 Allergic rxn?

I have never reacted to anything in my tank. I am keeping my fingers crossed!
My sexy hubby got a wicked infection once, from a lionfish sting. The plastic surgeon said it was from the H2O.He was on TB antibiotics for months. He was wishing they would amputate!

I shoulda got a pic. It was ugly!

 sting

I was actually trying to save a male flame wrasse out of an overflow in a tank that i was servicing. My arm was inside the overflow for about 10 minutes before i finally got him but all the sides of the overflow box were covered in Aptasia. I would get similar reactions with other anemones but never like this. This happened about two years ago and i believe the fish is still swimming happy in the tank so it was worth it i think!

 ouch

That looks like it hurts. I am lucky to have never had that before. I did however have a massive infection from my tank once though.

 Woah!

That looks bad. I've never had a reaction to anything either although I was once stung by an aptaisia I was removing from my sump. I caught it right in the bend of my finger. I din't think they were strong enough to cause a sting you could feel, but it proved me wrong. It felt like an electric bee sting. Best way I can describe it, and it lasted for about half an hour. Weird!
